In between Charlotte and Monroe, you will find the area known as Matthews, which encompasses 17 square miles. Early settlers were attracted to Matthews by its rich soil and abundant game. The attraction to this quant suburb holds true to this day, only now people are drawn to its residential areas, shopping centers, recreational facilities, hotels, restaurants and a hospital.
Matthews is filled with a mixture of new and historic sites, providing an abundance of activities to keep the whole family entertained.
It is renowned in September for its Labor Day Weekend Matthews Alive festival, which is dedicated to the support of the non-profit local organizations. Here, family members of all ages can enjoy great food, arts, carnival rides, and fantastic entertainment. For all of the sports fans, this neighborhood is owner of the new Matthews “Sportsplex”, an athletic complex consisting of 12 fields and a stadium where many sporting events are held on a daily basis. Matthews Playhouse School of Theater, the Historical Public Library, and the Four Mile Creek Greenway are also attractive elements of Matthews.
Matthews is a part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System, the second largest school district in North Carolina. Schools zoned in Matthews include Matthews Elementary, Crown Point Elementary, and Elizabeth Lane Elementary, Crestdale Middle, and David W. Butler High School. To add on to the excellence in Matthews’s education, award winning Covenant Day School, Charlotte Christian School, and Carmel Christian are private religious schools located in the nearby area.
