1. Fort Mill

Also known as York County School District 4, Fort Mill ranks first on the list thanks to A grades in academics and outcomes as well as top notch teachers.

The district operates 15 schools in total – nine elementary schools, four middle schools and two high schools. One of the district’s two high schools, Fort Mills High, was awarded New American High School designation in 2000, making it one of the top schools in the nation and a model for other high schools to follow.

2. Union County

The sixth largest school district in North Carolina, Union County covers a total of sixteen towns and cities. These include Waxhaw and Weddington, which are an easy half hour drive away from downtown Charlotte.

Also based in York County, the area served by Clover school district includes the up and coming Lake Wylie, which is situated a mere half hour drive from downtown Charlotte.

Clover district’s eleven schools – seven elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school and one alternative school – boast the third best academics in the state. They also have a 14:1 teacher ratio, well below the national average of 16:1. Small wonder, the Clover school district is ranked the 12th best place to teach in South Carolina.

8. Lincoln County Schools

Lincoln County Schools serves over 11,627 students  and has 1200 full-time employees.  The district has 24 schools—14 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 4 high schools, Lincoln County School of Technology, and an alternative school.

  • Lincoln County Schools graduation rate is 90.6%, one of the highest in the region and 4.8% higher than the state average graduation rate.
  • Lincoln County Schools ranked 12th in the state on the Career and College indicator (level 4 and 5).
  • Lincoln County Schools ranked 17th in the state on Grade Level Proficiency indicator (level 3, 4, 5).
  • Lincoln County Schools ranked 20th in  the state on the ACT indicator (percent of students meeting UNC system entry score of 17).
